Horrors of the Salem Institute
The truth of this "school" exposed!
The Salem Institute has always been more of a reform school for children that didn't get a letter to the prestigious Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. Come to find out, it's not that they didn't receive their letters because they were not invited to attend, but were either sent to the Salem Institute by their families for whatever reason or, more disturbingly, grabbed and forced into the so-called school without anyone, including any family they may have, knowing! That's right! This Institute literally kidnapped children! So how is it that no one knew about this?
Well, for years, the Institute lied about exactly what their actual goal was. Somehow getting away with being labeled as a school for troubled children, the Institute would not only not teach these children how to properly use their magic, but would hand them a wand and tell them, "Good luck!" with using it! They not only didn't really teach these children, but there have been reports that they would lock up many of them for the simple reason of being a werewolf! Once a month, these werewolves would be locked in a cage so they could "deal" with their transformations. They were treated like they were less than anything but a living soul! It's more than just an outrage, it's down right horrendous! And even this wasn't the worst of it! Oh no! It even has torture as one of their methods, if you can even fathom something this evil.
The biggest shock to MACUSA is the fact that there were quite a few students that have been tortured using magic, draining them mentally and also physically. Thankfully, the Magical Congress of the United States has immediately put a stop to the Salem Institute once they learned of what the actual agenda for the place was. Once the school had been cleared of all faculty as well as children, the government is making sure charges are being pressed to the fullest extent as well as working overtime to get these children back to their families.
However, the nightmare these children have been through isn't exactly over with yet. While some may end up back with their families, I've heard from sources that there are many that are actually orphans. The Social Services are putting in the extra work to make sure everyone makes it home to at least a loving family for the holidays this year, but it truly is an uphill battle, trying to find out the information for each and every one of these kids.
Before Greylock, the mountain was called Grand Hoosac—the name of the Native Americans who were a sub-tribe of the Mohicans. Settlers of Pittsfield, however, called the mountain Saddleback because of its appearance. How Greylock came to be the accepted name is unclear. One tradition says that the name of the Indian chief, Gray-Lock, was bestowed on the mountain. Another states that mists around the summit, a common occurrence, gave rise to the name. Apparently, the gray clouds were likened to a lock of hair.
There are a number of features on the Greylock massif that have interesting names. On the west side is an enormous gulf or valley called the Hopper, which is closed in on three sides by mountains. It was so named because its shape looks like a coal or grain hopper. Although it is a product of drainage, it was probably enlarged by glacial ice during the Ice Age.
Today, most of the Hopper is a natural area that’s open to hikers. Nearby Money Brook was named for a counterfeit gang that supposedly worked in the area. Bellows Pipe, the hollow between Greylock and Ragged Mountain, is a natural conduit for the winds, hence its name. Jones Nose, the end or the halfway point of our recommended walk, was named for the man who cleared and farmed the land.
Today Descendants of the Mohicans still reside in the area. The traditions of braves or Warriors of the tribes still roam the area known as Warriors of the Mountain. They guard over their territory keeping it safe. Their territory includes Mount Greylock, the village of Agawam and the town of Greylock with everything in between. All of them are witches or wizards. Most of them probably attended the magic school Ilvermorny.
